Winter Wisdom From Be Safe

15th November 2017

Top tips for keeping your home safe this winter – and how your Hive devices can help.

As the nights draw in, burglaries go up and more often than not, they happen on weekdays before people get back from work. But there are things you can do to help prevent them. Just follow some simple steps the Met Police have put together and you can be a hero in your own home.

Their new crime prevention campaign is called ‘Be Safe’ and we’re delighted to be supporting it. The Hive family of smart products allow you to easily control your home through the Hive app. So what are the secrets to keeping your home safe this winter and how can your Hive devices help?

Top tips from the Met

As part of Be Safe, the Met have the following pieces of advice that make up 3 step protect.

  1. Protect your valuables
  • Always keep valuables like tablets and laptops out of sight from windows and store keys away from the letterbox.
  • Help police identify your property if stolen by using a property marking kit and taking photos. (There’s more about marking kits at met.police.uk/mettrace.)
  • Consider buying a safe or using other safe storage providers.
  1. Safeguard your building
  • Lock all windows and double lock doors when you go out, even if it’s only for a few minutes.
  • Make your home look occupied: cancel deliveries if you’re going away and use timer lights (or if you’ve got Hive Active Lights, there’s even more you can do! (More on that later)
  • Install a burglar alarm and make sure your locks are strong enough to keep burglars out.
  1. Secure your outside
  • Keep gates, sheds and garages locked and don’t leave tools lying around as they can be used to break in.
  • Keep hedges at the front low and install outdoor lighting so burglars have nowhere to hide.
  • Install trellises and spiky plants to stop burglars from climbing over fences.

A little extra help from Hive

Hive products are designed to help you look after your home and give you peace of mind when you’re out and about. There are lots of smart things you can do to make your home less attractive to burglars.

Lights on if you’re out late

Hive Active Lights can make it look like someone’s at home (even if they’re not). You can turn them on or off using your smartphone, so if you know you’re going to be home late you can schedule a few lights to come on and deter any unwanted visitors.

Keep burglars in the dark with Mimic mode

Shutting your windows and doors is a no-brainer. But as obvious as it is, it’s amazing how easy it is to forget whether you’ve actually done it or not. That’s where another of your Hive devices will come in useful – a Hive Window or Door Sensor. You can use it to double check everything’s closed and it can also send a notification to your smartphone if a window or door is opened when you’re away.

Check everything’s shut with a Hive Sensor

Shutting your windows and doors is a no-brainer. But as obvious as it is, it’s amazing how easy it is to forget whether you’ve actually done it or not. You can use it to double check everything’s closed and it can also send a notification to your smartphone if a window or door is opened when you’re away.

Light them up like a Christmas tree with Hive Actions

Hive Actions can help you get even more out of your sensors. Hive Actions are clever ways to link up your Hive devices so they work together automatically. For example you can link your Hive Window or Door Sensor to your Hive Active Lights, so they come on the moment someone walks in the door.

Turn your plugs on and off with a tap of the Hive app

Leaving a lamp, music or TV on is a classic ruse to make it look like someone’s in. But if they’re on 24/7 the disguise starts to get a bit thin (it’s not great for your energy bill either). However, if they’re connected to a Hive Active Plug that’s not a problem: just turn them off then back on again from your smartphone.

See what’s going on with a Hive Camera

Even better, with the Hive Camera you can see what’s going on at home and record what you see from wherever you are. Simply having a camera might be just enough to make would-be burglars think again, too.
