Frequently asked questions
How do I locate my internal stop tap?
Your internal stop tap is usually located in the kitchen under the sink but it can be anywhere on the ground floor of your home.
It’s important you are aware of where your internal stop tap is just in case there’s an emergency and you need to turn off the water. A qualified plumber will be able to help you locate your internal stop tap. Other common places for your stop tap are:
Kitchen cupboard
Bathroom
WC / cloakroom
Garage / utility room
Cellar
Under the stairs
How do I install my Hive Leak Sensor?
Your Hive Leak Sensor should be installed on your mains water pipework, as close to the internal stop tap as possible and before the pipework splits to supply other areas of your home. This is to ensure that it’s monitoring your entire mains water pipework.
> Get help on how to find your stop tap
Important: the Hive Leak Sensor must be fitted to your internal mains water pipework in a heated part of your home and not in an external location. You’ll need to make sure your Hive Leak Sensor is correctly installed and maintained for it to work and that you have mobile coverage to get notifications. Exclusions apply, see our Terms and Conditions.
Once you've found your stop tap, follow the steps below:
Install your Hive Leak Sensor on the ‘home’ side of your stop tap and before any branches on the mains water pipework.
The direction of the water flow is usually indicated by an arrow on the stop tap. If the arrow is not visible you should install the Leak Sensor as close to the stop tap as possible.

What does it mean if I receive a high flow alert?

Faulty toilet valve
Leaking pipe
Water softener
Long shower
Outside tap
What does it mean if I receive a low flow alert?
A low flow alert means that your leak sensor has picked up a drip somewhere on your property. For this type of alert, you will not be notified straight away. Check your settings to see what your notification threshold is. Typical sources of this type of water flow are:
Dripping valve (water tank or toilet)
Leaking pipe
Shower head
Which clip should I use for my Hive Leak Sensor?
Your Hive Leak Sensor comes with two clips used to connect the device to the pipework. Match the correct clip to your pipework. The smaller clip is designed to be installed on 15mm and the larger clip on 22mm pipework.
What if my pipe branches straight after my stop tap?
Try to install your Hive Leak Sensor before any pipe branches. Failure to install in the desired location could mean only part of your mains water pipework is being monitored.
What devices can I get the Hive app on?
You can get the Hive app on many smartphones, tablets and the Apple Watch. iOS or Android devices must be running an up-to-date operating system.
