              How do heat pumps work?

              Heat pumps work a bit like a fridge or air conditioning unit, but in reverse. A special refrigerant liquid is used to transfer heat from one place to another. But whereas a fridge moves the heat outwards, keeping things cool inside, a heat pump moves the heat outdoors inside your home. Air source is just one kind of heat pump – there are also heat pumps that can transfer heat from the ground or from water.

              How much do heat pumps typically cost?

              The government grant of up to £7,500 can significantly reduce the cost of a heat pump. However, the exact cost will depend on your property and whether any additional work is needed to get the best from a heat pump. That could include extra insulation to ensure it works efficiently, new pipework, or new radiators.

              How efficient are heat pumps?

              Heat pumps are based on a highly energy-efficient technology. A modern gas boiler will be around 90% efficient, which means 10% of the energy that’s used is lost in the process. However, a heat pump is around 350% efficient – which means they're putting out three and a half times the energy in the form of heat as they're using in electricity.

              Do heat pumps work with radiators?

              Yes, and they work with underfloor heating too. Heat pumps do the same job as a traditional gas boiler would – heating the water that then passes through your central heating system. The main difference is that heat pumps generate heat at a lower, steadier rate than a boiler which gives you quick bursts of high heat. The lower heat output of a heat pump means you might need bigger radiators to ensure they keep your home cosy.

              How noisy are heat pumps?

              Heat pumps operate at around 40 decibels and can go up to 60 decibels if they are working really hard. That’s about the same as an air conditioning unit, a bird singing outside your home or light traffic. And because the heat pump is installed outside your property, you probably won’t even notice it.

              What homes are not suitable for heat pumps?

              Due to the size of a heat pump and the space needed outside, some homes such as flats and apartments aren’t suitable. It’s also important for your home to be well insulated.  

              How are heat pumps installed?

              Our heat pumps are installed on the ground outside of your property. You’ll need enough space for the unit and installation can take up to a week, with specialist engineers fitting the heat pump and connecting it to your central heating system.

              How do heat pumps work in winter?

              Heat pumps can keep your home cosy and supplied with hot water all year round – even when temperatures get as low as -15°C. That’s why they’re so popular in chilly Scandinavia! Although the air might feel very cold to us, it still contains enough warmth for the heat pump to extract and use in your home.

              Would I need to upgrade my home?

              That will depend on your property as every home is unique. To get the best from a heat pump your home needs to be well insulated, have suitable pipework and have an appropriate volume of radiators.

              Why might I need to change my radiators for an air source heat pump?

              Air source heat pumps keep your home warm by producing steady amounts of lower heat, rather than quick bursts of high heat like a gas boiler. This lower heat output means you might need bigger radiators so that there’s more surface area for the lower heat output.

              Does the heat pump come with a warranty?

              Yes, your heat pump has a 5-year warranty. This covers any repairs you need to your heat pump and includes:
              · all reasonable parts and labour
              · unlimited number of repairs
              · up to £1,000 (inc. VAT) for getting access and making good for each repair

              In addition, you’ll get a 1-year warranty that covers any repairs to your controls and central heating system.

              As with warranties for gas boilers, you’ll need an annual service of your heat pump to keep the warranty valid for the whole 5-year period.

              What’s the difference between air source and ground source heat pumps?

              Both types of heat pump keep your home warm by transferring natural heat from outdoors to your home. The main difference is that air source heat pumps take warmth from the surrounding air, while ground source heat pumps collect heat from pipes buried underground. Both types of heat pump use renewable energy and reduce your carbon footprint, but ground source heat pumps need more space and are more expensive to install.

Government grants of up to £7,500 are available for most homes, or up to £9,000 when replacing oil or LPG heating systems (available from July 2026), subject to eligibility and application approval. Your installer must be MCS certified. Full criteria at gov.uk. Eligibility (Scotland): Funding available through Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan. Grants of up to £7,500 towards a heat pump. You must be a homeowner in Scotland, contact Home Energy Scotland to get a written funding offer before work starts, and use an MCS-certified installer and product. Replacement heat pumps aren't eligible for grant funding. Full criteria on homeenergyscotland.org. Subject to terms and eligibility.
