Here are the answers to a few key questions, to help you have your Hive Smart Thermostatic

Radiator Valve up and running in no time.

TRVs control the flow of hot water into an individual radiator so they can be used to manage how you heat individual rooms / radiators throughout your home. With smart TRVs, like the Hive Radiator Valve, you can can control them via an app and set up specific temperatures and schedules for each one you have installed throughout your house.

No. Hive Radiator Valves only require a Hive Hub and the Hive app and can work with your existing heating set-up. However, without Hive Active Heating, they will only be able to control the heat from individual radiators while your heating is on. And if you want to turn them up, they won't be able to override your current thermostat setting or schedule.

Hive Radiator Valves can be used with most water-based radiators (using gas or oil boilers). Replacing an existing TRV (a large, cylindrical valve with a numbered dial) on your radiator is straightforward; just unscrew your existing TRV, select the right adaptor and screw a Hive Radiator Valve in its place.

If you have older-style radiators with simple on/off valves (smaller valves without a numbered dial), installation is a bit more complicated and will require a heating professional - or someone confident in fitting and plumbing a radiator - to assess what’s best for your home.

Remember that Hive Radiator Valves will not work with electric heating systems / electric radiators.

That’s all fine – in those rooms where you have installed a Hive Radiator Valve, you’ll be able to manage the temperature from the Hive app. Where you haven’t installed a Hive Radiator Valve they’ll just carry on working like a normal radiator – controlled by your main thermostat and the dial setting on the radiator.

Yes, as you can set them up to only heat a room when it’s likely to be occupied. The best way to do this is to set a schedule for each room via the Hive app. You’ll save the most energy if you also keep the doors closed in rooms you don’t want to heat.

Once installed, the Hive Radiator Valve takes a little time to learn about your radiator while it calibrates. After this, it will be up and running in no time. Here’s what you need to know:

While calibrating

  • Your heating needs to be on. If you install your Hive Radiator Valve over the summer and your heating is off, that means it will start calibrating the next time you start heating your home again.

  • You can still use your Hive Radiator Valves while they aren’t calibrated – it will just take a little longer for your radiator to warm up (30-60 mins rather than 5-15 mins).

  • Want to speed up the process? There’s a special calibration cycle available in app version 10.15 onwards.

  • To test that your Hive Radiator Valve is working while it calibrates, use the dial on the front to set it to a high temperature. The valve should open immediately.

Once calibrated

  • Even when your Hive Radiator Valve is fully calibrated, it can take 5-15 minutes to fully open after getting a command from the app. This helps save battery life and avoids any temperature overshoots. So you stay as comfortable as possible.

  • One more thing to remember: your radiator will only warm up if your heating is on!
