Solar panel repair guide: common problems and how to fix them

Solar panels are built to be reliable and low-maintenance, but issues can still appear over time. When they do, it’s not always a fault. In fact, many solar panel problems come down to simple changes in weather, usage or system settings.

If you already have solar panels and something doesn't seem right, here’s how to understand the most common issues with solar panels, and what you can do to put them right.

Why are my solar panels not working?

If your solar panels are not working or showing no generation at all, start by checking your inverter. A blank screen, warning light, or error code usually points to a system issue that needs attention.

Next, check your monitoring system or using the Hive app. This should help confirm whether the issue is system-wide or intermittent. If there’s no generation showing at all, turn off and restart your system only if your installer has advised it’s safe to do so. Otherwise, this is usually a case for one of Hive’s qualified technicians.

Reduced solar panel performance

The most common issue is that your solar panel output may be lower than usual. If this is the case, start with a simple visual check from ground level.

Try and look out for shading from trees, plants or other objects around your property. Trees and shrubs can grow over time and create new shading, particularly at certain times of day. If shading is the cause, trimming foliage may help.

Next, check for dirt or debris. Leaves, dust, or bird droppings can block sunlight and reduce output. You may often find that rain helps clean panels, but if build-up is becoming visible, they will need a professional clean to improve performance.

Solar panel not charging battery

If your solar panel is not charging battery storage, you will need to check how much excess energy your system is producing.

Your home will always use solar energy first. Only once demand is met does surplus energy go into the battery. For instance, if generation is low on cloudy days, charging may slow or stop completely.

If you’re seeing good generation but no charging, check your system settings and look for any alerts or warnings in your monitoring app. Some systems prioritise household use or delay charging until certain thresholds are met.

If everything looks correct but charging still isn’t happening, contact your installer or a qualified technician to check the configuration or communication between components.

Solar battery not charging properly

However, if your solar battery is not charging at all, even when excess energy is available, you will need to start by checking for system alerts or warnings. This can sometimes be caused by a communication issue between the inverter and battery. Often, you’ll find that a system restart can resolve minor faults.

If the issue continues, avoid attempting further fixes yourself. Battery systems are complex and should be checked by a qualified technician to ensure safe operation and correct configuration.

Problems with solar panels on roofs

Finally, if you’re experiencing problems with solar panels on roofs, start by checking for visible signs of movement or damage from ground level. High winds, debris, or long-term exposure can sometimes loosen fittings or affect performance. However, many issues won’t be visible externally.

The best first step is to check your system output. If performance has dropped and no obvious cause is visible, use your monitoring system or app to confirm when the change started. This helps your installer or technician diagnose the issue more quickly.

Solar battery efficiency over time

Solar batteries gradually lose some of their storage capacity as they are charged and discharged. How quickly this happens depends on the battery, manufacturer, model and how it is used.

As the battery ages, it may hold less electricity than it did when new, meaning less stored energy is available to use later. If you notice a significant drop in performance, check your warranty and speak to your installer or the manufacturer about your options.

Older solar panel systems

If your solar system was installed several years ago, its age could contribute to reduced performance. Older systems may use earlier generations of panels or inverters and may not have a battery, meaning you could be using less of your generated electricity at home.

An upgrade could help you make better use of your solar energy, but if your system receives Feed-in Tariff (FIT) payments, check how any changes could affect your existing agreement first. Speak to your original installer or a qualified solar professional before making changes.

When solar panel repair is needed

If your solar system continues to underperform after basic checks, or has stopped generating properly, it’s time to contact a qualified professional. Issues can be caused by the inverter, wiring, panels or other ageing components. Inverters typically last 10–15 years, so may need replacing before the panels themselves.

Before arranging a repair, check the warranties included with your system. Solar panels can have manufacturer warranties of up to 30 years, while batteries and inverters may have warranties of around 10 years.
