If you own an Amazon Echo, you’re probably already using Alexa’s handy features to help you around the house. From turning up your favourite song to controlling your smart lights, the popular virtual assistant has transformed the way we carry out daily tasks. But did you know that, with Hive, you can use Alexa for security too?

How can I use Alexa to control my smart home security devices?

If you have any of our security devices, like a Hive View camera or Hive Siren, you can use your Amazon Echo, Dot, or Show to control them. It’s super easy: just follow our step-by-step guide to get everything set up in a few short minutes. Then all you need to do is say things like:

  • Alexa, turn the alarms on.

  • Alexa, camera on.

  • Alexa, arm my home in Away Mode.

  • Alexa, disarm my home (Alexa will then ask for your voice PIN before doing this.)

Meet our Hive Alexa home security devices

There are lots of great smart products on the market that you can connect up for extra home protection, and here at Hive we’ve got a full range, too. Whether you want to keep an eye on things with a smart camera, or want an alarm system that can be activated remotely – our range of Alexa-compatible home security devices are great for peace of mind when you’re out and about.

“Alexa, turn the alarm on”

Hive HomeShield is our smart security system designed to scare off any unwanted visitors and alert others in your community. One of the things we love about it is, you can choose the smart devices you want it to work with to create a tailor-made alarm system that’s just right for your home. And they all work with Alexa.

Most people start with a keypad and our 110dB siren, which is about as loud as a police car. It also has a built-in security light, and a blue status light, to deter potential intruders. Control it from the keypad, your smartphone or set it up to work with Amazon Alexa and turn on the alarm as you run out of the door in the morning.

“Alexa, camera on outside”

If you’re looking to protect your home with an outdoor security camera, our Hive View Outdoor camera is ideal – and compatible with Alexa.

The moment Hive View Outdoor detects people, motion or sound, it starts recording and sends a notification to your smartphone, tablet and Apple Watch. You can livestream and record day or night in full 1080p HD, or even talk to people at your door with two-way audio.

“Alexa, turn the indoor cameras on”

Alternatively, our indoor camera automatically records when it detects people, sound or motion up to 60ft away during the day. You can set it up yourself in a few minutes and even choose specific areas you want it to cover – like your front door, but not the entire room. As with the outdoor version, Hive View Indoor is fully compatible with Amazon Echo products and can be controlled through Alexa.

Top tip: make the most of Alexa’s Away Mode

One of Alexa’s lesser-known party tricks is ‘Away Mode’, said to be the first ever home protection skill that harnesses the power of human awkwardness to ward off unwanted visitors!

Say “Alexa, enable Away Mode” and your Amazon Echo will start playing an eclectic mix of conversations designed to make it appear as if someone is home. Choose from the unfortunate-couple-going-through-a-break-up or the mundane sounds of a mother and daughter assembling flat-pack furniture – Alexa will play a track and make it sound like someone’s in whenever you head out.
