How Hive HomeShield can help you protect your home

Now is a great time to consider updating your home security system. With Hive HomeShield, you can protect your home through your phone using Hive devices to deter intruders and monitor your property, inside and out.

How does Hive HomeShield work?

Hive HomeShield lets you set your alarm remotely, get intelligent alerts, livestream from your cameras to your device, share video evidence with authorities and loads more. This is smart tech designed to help you take action; controlling your home security from wherever you are. So you can enjoy your summer, knowing your home and your family are safe.

To get started, subscribe to Hive HomeShield. This unlocks all kinds of smart monitoring features in your Hive app. You can then connect up any Hive devices you already have installed, like sensors and cameras, or add new devices like our Hive Siren and Keypad.

What’s included in a Hive HomeShield subscription?

Hive HomeShield is packed with lots of great security features. Here are some of our favourites:

  • Set your alarm remotely using your smartphone, tablet or Apple Watch.

  • Get a phone call, notification or text the moment your alarm is triggered.

  • Guest PIN codes with time-limited access control.

  • Family and friends’ access. So, they’ll also receive alerts and you’ll know who gets home when.

  • Event timeline and incident reports.

  • Multi-camera view.

  • Call the police straight from the Hive app.

  • Home, Away and Sleep modes – so the right part of your home is protected at the right time.

What are HomeShield Modes?

Because we know that everyone’s security needs are different and they’re likely to change depending on the time of day, HomeShield has three modes: Home, Sleep and Away. These can all be personalised to suit your home and situation.

  • Home: Home mode is ideal for when you and your family are at home, but you still want to monitor outside your property. It turns-off internal Hive devices but keeps external sensors and cameras on.

  • Away: Away mode keeps your property and belongings safe while you're out. Choose which devices you want to activate, and it will turn them all on when you leave.

  • Sleep: Sleep mode can be used at night to partially arm your home. You can set it up so that devices upstairs stay off, while those downstairs keep a watchful eye while you’re in bed.

Can I install HomeShield myself?

If you’re comfortable with a power drill, then yes, you can get HomeShield up and running in a few hours.

To install devices like the Hive View Outdoor external camera and Siren, you’ll need the right equipment; including a tall ladder that allows you to safely drill at the recommended height, and a power drill with a masonry drill bit of at least 400mm length.

If you’ve got all the kit and you’re good to go, we can take you through a step-by-step HomeShield installation guide in the app.

Can I use HomeShield with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant?

Yes, you can use your Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant to change modes, and arm or disarm your alarm. So when you’re running out of the door, school bags and scooters in hand, you can just say “Alexa, arm HomeShield”.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to get set up:

Will my pets set off Hive HomeShield?

If you got a new furry friend during lockdown, you can still use Hive HomeShield but you’ll just need to spend a bit of time thinking about where and how you install your devices.

Our Hive View indoor camera is the perfect option – as this can distinguish a person from an animal when detecting motion.

Hive Motion Sensors can't identify between people and pets. So if your puppy has free roam of the house, position your sensors 4 to 5 feet off the ground (which should keep them out of range). You can also position your sensor upside down, so it scans the space from above down, as opposed to below up.

What about if my internet goes down?

It might be a disaster if your internet connection drops out when you’re streaming the penultimate episode of that gripping new series.

Fortunately for your home security system, it’s not too much of an issue. If you lose your broadband connection your HomeShield sensors will continue to work. If the alarm is triggered, the siren will sound and the keypad will continue to work. However, you won’t receive a notification.

As soon as the connection is restored the reports and activity logs will be updated and the system should work as normal again.
