Alexa, tell Hive to...

Now you can control your home with your voice thanks to Amazon Echo and your new virtual assistant, Alexa.

Let's get started

Amazon alexa@212x180

What is Alexa?

An assistant, an extra pair of hands, a new best friend - that's Alexa. She'll turn the heating on when you're feeling a bit chilly. She'll switch the lights on when it gets dark. She'll even turn the kettle on if you fancy a cup of tea. Alexa is the voice of Amazon Echo, so once you’ve got it in your home, all you need to say is Alexa, tell Hive to...

What can Alexa and
Hive do?

Here are just a few examples of what Alexa can do with your smart lights, plugs, and heating.

"Alexa, tell Hive to put the heating on to 22 degrees"

Hive thermostat@50x50

"I would love to. Your heating is now set to 22 degrees"

"Alexa, tell Hive to turn the hallway light off"

"Hallway light is off. You can remind me later to turn it on for you if you like"

"Alexa, tell Hive to pop the kettle on"

"Kettle is on. You can remind me later to turn it off for you"

Help and Support

Why doesn't Alexa recognise my device?

There are around 12,000 device names that Alexa will recognise. If she's struggling to control yours it could be that it isn't in her database yet. We update this list on a regular basis, but to save time we'd recommend renaming your device to one of the 12,000 names she can recognise.

You can check this by clicking here (don’t worry, you can search the database. No need to read the 12,000 names.)

To change your device name

Login to Hive, go to ‘Manage devices’ and click on the device you want to edit. In the Hive app, tap on the pencil icon to edit the name. On desktop, click ‘Manage’ to the right of the device. The next screen you see will have a box you can edit with the device name in. On both the app and desktop you'll see a confirmation message when the change has successfully saved.

Alexa asks me for my light, plug or zone name. Why?

Hive is all about giving you control, so Alexa will always ask unless you have told her exactly which zone, light or plug you want to control.

If you're not sure what they're called, head to your Hive app or login online. Go to the ‘Manage devices’ screen to see a list of all your device names.
